Eating and drinking around campus

Anyone who works and studies hard needs the right food to fuel them throughout the day. The traditional and most popular place for German university students, professors and staff to have lunch – the main meal in Germany – is the on-campus dining hall known as 'Mensa' (the Latin word for table), where the food is cheap and varied.

At HTWK Leipzig, the 'Mensa Academica' is located at the heart of our main campus. Newly opened in 2003, the Mensa features two modern dining halls, each with a capacity of 230, where you may take your meals in a brightly lit, welcoming environment. There is a choice of four dishes offered every day, including one vegetarian meal and a variety of salads and desserts. These subsidised meals are divided into several price categories and cost between 1.50 and 6 euros.

The 'Cafeteria Academica', housed between the Mensa’s two dining halls under a huge class ceiling, is a popular place for students to grab a bite to eat in between classes, have a cup of coffee and meet up with friends. In the afternoons, they may choose from a selection of sandwiches, cakes and other cold and warm snacks.

For those who prefer a bit more variety in terms of dishes and food venues, there is plenty to choose from. Studying on a campus based right in the heart of Leipzig’s most popular student neighbourhood means that you are never far away from a café, pub, restaurant or fast food place. Moreover, it is not uncommon among German students to prepare their own meals at home.
