UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE CENTRE

To improve students' ability to communicate internationally, foreign language classes are a required part of the curriculum in all academic programmes at HTWK Leipzig. The University Language Centre offers courses in English, Russian, French and Spanish. In addition to meeting their study programmes’ foreign language requirements, students may sit for an internationally recognised certificate.  The Language Centre is a test centre or venue for the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the English for Business Examination by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), IELTS and for the Certificate in Business Russian issued by the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute in Moscow.

As an international student coming to HTWK Leipzig to study for a full degree, you may take advantage of a German as a Foreign Language course (Deutsch als Fremdsprache im Studium, DaFiS), starting in the first semester and continuing for up to three semesters. There is no extra charge for attending this course, which has been designed not only to enhance your German proficiency, but also to provide you with essential academic skills such as discussion, outlining, note taking, research and presentation skills. In order to meet your programme’s foreign language requirements, you may even apply at your respective faculty to get ECTS credits for the DaFiS course. (Please note that international exchange/visiting students are not eligible for enrolment in this course.) Non-native speakers of German may also earn a TestDaF (Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache) certificate at HTWK Leipzig.

Language Centre courses are supported by a multimedia learning lab. The learning lab is open to all students and offers a diverse range of materials for independent, self-directed language study in English, Russian, French, Spanish and German as a Foreign Language, as well as in Italian, Portuguese and Latin. While the focus is on computer and web-assisted language learning using online resources and multimedia language learning software, students also find numerous text books and dictionaries, foreign language newspapers and periodicals, and an extensive collection of films on DVD.
