Development and testing of tools to support small and medium-sized enterprises in integrating data into their business models
The DigiTransSachs research group at HTWK Leipzig has developed a tool – the Business Model Canvas for Data Use in Organisations (BMC Data) – which enables organisations to assess the maturity of their business model in terms of data use and integration. To provide a comprehensive overview of all facets of the business model, the BMC Data examines and reflects on all relevant dimensions of a business model with regard to data usage.
A survey on its potential benefits revealed that the BMC Data is highly suitable for supporting companies in analysing and reflecting on their business model and for assessing the potential for the meaningful use of data.
The next step is to put the tool into practice. To this end, the individual dimensions need to be refined and generic recommendations for action derived. In addition, a web-based application (“Data Navigator”) is to be designed and developed to automate the BMC Data as far as possible. The tool is ultimately to be tested in an application trial.
The aim is to 1) test the tool “offline” with a partner organisation (an SME in the region), 2) further develop the BMC Data for more in-depth analyses and transfer these to an online environment (Data Navigator), and 3) based on the results, develop recommendations for action for companies on the use of data analysis (checklists; toolbox) and to provide a portfolio of tools and methods for implementation.
