The Joint Science Conference appointed the HTWK Vice-Rector for Research and Sustainability to the programme advisory board of the Federal-State Programme until 2028
The Expert Committee of the Joint Science Conference (GWK) appointed Prof. Dr Faouzi Derbel as an official member of the Programme Advisory Board for the Federal-State Programme “Promotion of Application-Oriented Research at Universities of Applied Sciences” for a term of office from 1 August 2026 to 30 June 2028.
In addition to Derbel, the Programme Advisory Board comprises 15 other experts from academia, industry and civil society, representing various specialist fields and possessing experience and expertise in applied research. The Federal-State agreement stipulates that the Programme Advisory Board shall support the Expert Committee by providing specialist recommendations on the programme lines and funding guidelines. The honorary members of the Programme Advisory Board are appointed for a term of three years; they may be reappointed once.
Background
The Federal Government and the governments of the Länder of the Federal Republic of Germany hereby conclude an agreement, on the basis of Article 91b(1) of the Basic Law, on the joint funding of application-oriented research at universities of applied sciences (HAW). They will jointly finance this until 2030. The programme comprises various funding instruments and is implemented, in particular, through programme strands and funding guidelines. To finance the programme, the Federal Government and the Länder are making available project funding totalling up to approximately 493 million euros for the entire duration of the programme.
About the person
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Faouzi Derbel has been Vice-Rector for Research and Sustainability at HTWK Leipzig since 2023. In 2013, he was appointed Professor of Smart Diagnostics and Online Monitoring at the Faculty of Engineering at HTWK Leipzig; he served as Vice-Dean for Research at his faculty for many years and, prior to that, held positions including Head of Development and Head of Product Innovation at Siemens Building Technologies. His research focuses on electrical networks and smart grids, machine diagnostics and energy-autonomous wireless sensor networks (WSN). Through his involvement in numerous projects and committees, he promotes interdisciplinary and international scientific exchange.
