Through its ‘LSN NetzWerkstatt’ programme, the Leipzig Science Network promotes networking in Leipzig – including three workshops with HTWK Leipzig
In order to connect researchers from related fields across different institutions and to jointly explore new research topics, the Leipzig Science Network (LSN) published the pilot call for proposals ‘LSN NetzWerkstatt’ in early 2026. The funded projects have now been announced: a total of six project teams, including three at HTWK Leipzig, will receive funding to cover the costs of networking workshops.
‘Additive Multimaterial Manufacturing’ Symposium on 10 June 2026
The first networking workshop will take place on 10 June 2026. The Additive Multimaterial Manufacturing (AM³) research group at HTWK Leipzig is organising the ‘AM³ Symposium’ in collaboration with the Academy of Visual Arts. At HTWK Leipzig, researchers have been driving forward additive manufacturing for many years through numerous research projects across various disciplines. Most recently, the university launched the new degree programme ‘3D Printing & Functional Surfaces’ and will open the new AM³ laboratory on the day of the event as a further piece of research infrastructure. To generate new ideas, skills and needs, the symposium focuses on systematically linking science and industry, as well as art, culture and education. Registration for the symposium is still open.
‘Smart Models’ workshop on 29–30 September 2026
Following an initial networking meeting the previous evening, HTWK Leipzig is planning to hold the ‘Smart Models’ workshop on 30 September 2026, in collaboration with members of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ Leipzig) and the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS). This workshop will address current topics in mathematical modelling, model reduction, numerical methods and simulation, as well as related software development projects. Mathematical models play a major role at all three institutions across various specialist fields. The planned workshop is therefore intended to provide deeper insights into specific problems arising from research into mathematical models. Further keynote presentations by external researchers are also intended to complement Leipzig’s expertise and stimulate joint research topics.
‘Simulation in Medical Technology’ workshop in autumn 2026
HTWK Leipzig, UFZ Leipzig and TROPOS are also planning a further workshop for autumn 2026, in collaboration with the University of Leipzig. Under the title ‘Simulation in Medical Technology as an Interface between Innovation and Cooperation’, the institutions aim to bring together researchers from engineering, medicine, environmental research and data-driven modelling to develop new joint research questions and perspectives for cross-institutional follow-up projects based on existing expertise. As demonstrated in previous joint research projects on UVC air disinfection in indoor spaces (BeCoLe) or on soft and continuum robotics for medical applications (SoKoRoMed), simulations in medical technology provide the methodological foundation for understanding complex systems, designing them virtually, validating them experimentally and translating them into clinical or health-related applications.
Background to the ‘LSN NetzWerkstatt’
Through the ‘LSN NetzWerkstatt’, the Leipzig Science Network aims to foster new research collaborations in Leipzig and open up new fields of research. The 22 full members of the LSN were eligible to apply. Proposals were selected from researchers at ten institutions. ‘Six project teams were successful. They exemplify the thematic diversity and innovative potential of Leipzig as a centre of science – ranging from 3D printing, mathematical modelling and AI, through spatial and urban research, to materials and medical technology research,” says Dr Kathleen Schlütter, Managing Director of the LSN. She adds: “We look forward to the interdisciplinary collaborations that will emerge and are eager to see the ideas and outcomes of the workshops.”
