Assessment of the functionality and effectiveness of green roofs for climate adaptation
Blue-green infrastructure is regarded as a potential solution for adapting to climate change and the associated challenges, which include drought, heat and biodiversity loss. As a result, it is already widely implemented. Green roofs play a key role in this context. However, isolated, often empirical analyses show that these elements do not always fulfil the expected functions, such as cooling effects, increased biodiversity or water retention.
There is often a lack of reliable data and criteria for assessing the functionality of these systems and their mechanisms of action. The aim of the project is to make the actual climate adaptation benefits of green roofs measurable on the basis of representative parameters and to derive recommendations for action and optimisation from this. The outcome is intended to be a tool that can be used to assess the functionality and climate impact of green roofs, whilst also facilitating the planning and optimisation of these systems. As irrigation plays a crucial role in optimisation, this aspect is the focus of the research. To this end, the project will develop or adapt measurement methods and combine their use. The practical applicability of these measures will be demonstrated, evaluated and validated through demonstration projects. Finally, a knowledge transfer and training concept will be developed and established.
