Modular construction designed for circularity
The builtZero project is developing sustainable building modules featuring a load-bearing frame system and sandwich wall elements made from efficient, environmentally friendly materials, including straw as insulation and timber. The focus is on optimised production, reduced weight and reversible construction processes. New joining techniques are intended to enable rapid, automated assembly and disassembly. Key innovations include lightweight carbon concrete elements, modular frames and reusable components, supported by automated manufacturing processes. The HTWK’s sub-project focuses on the building physics of the wall components, structural issues and the life cycle of the building modules. To this end, a building physics model and a life cycle model of the modules are being developed, enabling the various approaches for the modular wall construction system to be evaluated. In addition, HTWK is investigating possibilities for automating the assembly and disassembly of wall components and is conducting experiments.
