Manufacture of delicate three-dimensional lightweight concrete components
The aim of the project is to produce load-bearing, delicate, three-dimensional structural elements made of translucent concrete, all in one piece. To achieve this, optical fibres, textile reinforcement, high-performance concrete and skilled craftsmanship are combined with visionary forms. The result is a new interpretation of concrete as a building material – a light structure.
Architectural elements made of translucent concrete are currently limited to façade panels or wall cladding to create backlit lighting effects. The manufacturing process for these elements is significant: as a rule, large blocks are produced by layering concrete and optical fibres (OF). Thin panels, for example, are then created through sawing and polishing. Using this technique, it is not possible to produce either load-bearing components with textile reinforcement or three-dimensional, joint-free components.
The solution lies in making the optical fibres multifunctional and adapting them to the manufacturing process. A three-dimensionally shaped carrier textile forms the basis. Optical fibres are attached to the textile at the desired density and subsequently integrated into the formwork. The development of a preferred variant requires a high degree of coordination and thus significant research and development effort between the concrete matrix, the reinforcement, the desired light transmission, the shape, and the manufacturing process.
