Development of a method for deriving requirements for the selection of workflow-supporting systems for specific workflows
The production of an open-access publication is a complex process that requires consideration of aspects of project, business and workflow management. These workflows and processes were described in abstract terms in the predecessor project, OA-HVerlag, whilst the OA-STRUKTKOMM project mapped out the data flows within the IT infrastructures. Building on the results of the predecessor projects, the joint project OA-WFMS aims to analyse, together with stakeholders from academia and industry, the business processes and workflows in university and higher education publishers during the production of open-access publications, and to develop requirements for suitable workflow management systems (WFMS) based on these findings. By introducing a software solution to support the complex and ramified work steps, the urgently needed higher, more effective, more predictable and, above all, faster production throughput in OA academic publishers can be achieved, which would promote the acceptance, impact and dissemination of Open Access.
