Small mobile tags for greater flexibility
In many areas of business, so-called WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) are used to collect environmental data, for example to control lighting systems, door contacts or for automated access control solutions. The aim is to continuously track the locations of all relevant individuals and mobile assets (such as mobile devices or tools) and make this information available to building, logistics or security management via the WSN. As part of the research project, small mobile tags are being developed which can be quickly and unambiguously assigned to individuals or assets, carried by them, and permanently located via the existing WSN infrastructure. Given the need for maximum flexibility regarding the supported application scenarios, major challenges exist, particularly in the areas of miniaturisation, energy efficiency, and seamless, uninterrupted traceability of movement profiles.
To achieve this goal, each of the project partners is contributing innovative radio and sensor technologies to the project. CoreNetiX GmbH is providing its new IP500 radio standard and the associated CNX200 radio modules. IP500 is based on dual-band technology, utilising two frequency bands: 2.45 GHz and 868 MHz. Both radio bands have their respective advantages and disadvantages; they therefore complement each other and provide the WSN with the necessary redundancy. The second external project partner, NC SYSTEMS GmbH, is providing the inertial sensor technology for the TAG. Special sensors and signal processing make it possible to determine the TAG’s change in position very accurately over a very long period of time. Professor Derbel’s research group is providing its wake-up receiver technology for this purpose. To significantly reduce the TAGs’ energy consumption, it is necessary to use wake-up signals to bring the TAG into the active state. To this end, research has been conducted into special wake-up hardware and wake-up signals to meet all the requirements of the overall system. In addition, our research group implements data collection and evaluates the data. By consolidating and analysing the various data sources, it is possible not only to calculate a change in position but also to determine the location of the position or the asset.
