Digital quality assurance for soil mechanics laboratories with GeoLIMS
The GeoLIMS project is developing the first Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for the quality-assured digital recording of data from soil mechanics laboratories.
A particular challenge here is the high level of uncertainty in geotechnical parameters – caused by error-prone, manual processes in the laboratory and the inherent heterogeneity of the soil – which leads to resource-intensive construction projects due to substantial safety margins. There is currently no suitable software solution on the market that digitally maps laboratory processes in a structured manner whilst integrating quality assurance.
The societal relevance lies in the significant reduction of this uncertainty in parameter determination and the increase in the efficiency of geotechnical laboratories. The innovative core consists of a hybrid, AI-based multi-level plausibility check and a flexibly configurable interface for mobile data collection, which digitally maps the entire process chain from sample receipt to use in planning software.
Future applications include the automation and standardisation of laboratory processes in geotechnical laboratories, design offices and civil engineering authorities, initially in the DACH region and eventually internationally. GeoLIMS provides more precise and reliable data for the structural analysis and design of buildings and contributes to the urgently needed digitalisation and quality assurance within the industry.
