Development of a smart, wireless sensor network for monitoring natural environmental systems
The Wise-Net project is developing a smart, wireless sensor network for the automated real-time monitoring of geotechnical parameters such as natural moisture content and soil density.
The need for this arises from devastating flood events (e.g. 2023/2024), the damage caused by which is exacerbated, among other things, by reduced water absorption capacity and soil compaction. The manual, sporadic and heterogeneous recording of key soil parameters is labour-intensive and provides an inadequate data basis for reliable hydrological modelling and long-term monitoring.
Wise-Net provides an alternative to existing measurement technologies. By providing precise, comprehensive data and AI-based analysis, the system enables well-founded decisions to be made regarding flood protection. This reduces ecological and economic costs and ensures the long-term effectiveness of protective measures.
The energy-autonomous sensor nodes with underground radio communication are suitable for general environmental monitoring, analysing the effects of climate change, stability testing in construction, and, in particular, for disaster risk management to monitor dykes and areas exposed to the elements.
