positionen: 26. November 2025 um 19:15 Uhr
Architecture and social sustainability shows how we can better design for stakeholder agency, serve historically marginalised populations, and advance our theoretical thinking about sustainability more broadly. Alexandra Staub has edited a book that examines international trends and addresses both the urban and building technology levels. The design of buildings and urban environments is examined to illustrate how we can create more inclusive and equitable communities by expanding our design approach.
In her lecture, Alexandra Staub presents the book, which traces how the professionalisation of architecture and urban planning has excluded stakeholder participation and offers a range of methods and theoretical ideas for redesigning the design process for better social sustainability. The case studies address reparative urban and landscape design in the United States, informal market structures in Nigeria, co-designed housing for low-income communities in India and Brazil, and participatory design for housing, schools and health facilities in Europe and the United Kingdom. Design thinking and action are combined to demonstrate the potential of architecture for social change.
Following the lecture, there will be an opportunity for discussion. The event, part of the positionen series, will take place on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. in Lecture Hall Li 415, Architekturetage, Lipsius-Bau, HTWK LEIPZIG, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 145.
